The research reported in this thesis has been carried out at the Civil Engineering Depart-ment of Delft University of Technology since November 1992, on leave from the University of Minho. The algorithms have been implemented in pilot versions of the DIANA code. The calculations have been performed on a Silicon Graphics Workstation.
